Players posted to MLB

In the late 1990s, problems arose involving some players from Japan coming to play for Major League Baseball teams in the United States. One case was 1997 with Hideki Irabu, who refused to play for the Padres after San Diego acquired his rights. That essentially forced San Diego to trade his negotiating rights. The Yankees then acquired Irabu. A formal posting system was put in place before the 1999 season. (Database note: MLB salary and years listed below represent those figures in the initial contract.)
